Android N, And The Future Of Android

This year, Google released the Developer Beta for it's latest version of Android earlier than ever before. And with said Beta preview came a behind the scenes improvement all Android users will be glad to see.

So what does this mean for the future of Android?

One of the arguments against Android in the ever lasting iOS vs Android debate is the low adaption rate on Android devices to the latest software compared to iOS. It's thrown in the faces of Android users every year at WWDC. Now that developers have earlier access to the latest software than ever before, they will have more time to work on their apps and skins to get them ready for when the public version is released at the end of Summer. In theory, this will mean that people using devices from Samsung, LG, Huawei, etc, will no longer have to wait until the following year to experience the latest and greatest software features that Android has to offer.

There is more support for this in the update process itself.

Updating the software on your phone has become something of a lengthy process thanks to App Optimisation which happens when the phone reboots following an update. It is frustrating enough on Lollipop when you would receive a handful of updates a year, but now, on Marshmallow, there is an update every month, making the problem more prominent.

When the Android N Beta was released it was announced that this process will be a lot smoother with App Optimisation happening in the background when the phone is back up and running. No longer will you be without your device for long periods of time when an update is available.

The future of Android is looking, quick, smooth and overall less frustrating. It's about time that Android looked towards these small nuances when working on future versions. The question is, what will Apple put in it's WWDC Keynote presentation when these changes are live?
